From promise to proof: bio-composite façades withstand the winter

At Bambooder, we believe the transition to sustainable materials doesn’t accelerate through more reports or promises, but through proof. That’s why, together with Leafy and NPSP, we launched a pilot in which bio-based façade panels were not only developed, but immediately exposed to real-world conditions. No controlled lab setup, just outside. Where they belong.

From concept to reality

In November, six green façade panels were installed at The Green Village in Delft. The panels combine a green façade system with a structural bio-composite material based on bamboo BMC. This pilot was made possible in part through funding from the Province of North Holland under an MIT R&D program, aimed at accelerating innovation in sustainable materials. The goal was simple: prove that bio-based composites are suitable for real outdoor applications. Not in theory, but in practice.

The ultimate test: a Dutch winter

Since installation, the panels have faced everything you would expect from a Dutch winter: frost, snow, rain, and prolonged exposure to moisture. Exactly the conditions that are often used as arguments not to start working with new materials. And the result?

The panels still look as good as new. No visible degradation. No structural issues. No compromises in performance. Exactly as they should.

Proof doesn’t stop at one season

As an industry, we all know: the real test doesn’t end with winter. UV exposure, heat, and prolonged dry conditions place just as much demand on materials. That’s why we’re looking ahead to the coming months with the same determination. Let the warm, dry summer come. These panels will stay in place. Continue to perform. And continue to prove that bio-based materials belong in outdoor applications, all year round.

The pilot proves it. The next step is yours.

We hear it all the time: “We want to see proof in the market first.” That moment is now. This pilot at The Green Village is not a concept on paper, it’s a working application in the open air. It shows that bio-based composites are not only sustainable, but also technically viable for façade applications. The conversation shifts from “can it?” to “why aren’t we doing it yet?”

The power of bio-based façades

Beyond the proven performance in this pilot, bamboo BMC offers clear advantages over traditional façade materials:

  • Low CO₂ impact
Bamboo grows rapidly and stores CO₂, resulting in a significantly lower footprint compared to conventional materials.
  • Design freedom
BMC technology enables complex geometries and integrated solutions, such as combining structure with green façade systems.
  • Built for outdoor conditions
Moisture, temperature fluctuations, and UV exposure do not compromise long-term performance.
  • Proven fire performance
The material achieves fire class B, meeting façade requirements without compromising on sustainability.
  • Circular potential
Designed with reuse and future-proof material flows in mind.

Stop asking. Start building.

This pilot is a first step, but one that changes the conversation. The proof is there. The technology works. The application is already outside. The next step lies with those who are ready to move. If you’re an architect, façade builder, or building owner working on projects where sustainability and performance come together, this is the moment to look beyond conventional materials. Come and see it at The Green Village. Experience it in practice. Explore what it can mean for your project. We’re building forward. The question is who joins.
